Planning around Income Fluctuation in the Foreign Service

A Presentation by Hui-chin Chen

Whether you are giving up one income, building a location independent business, or seeking spousal employment from post to post, Foreign Service families face the reality of significant drop or increase of disposable income from year to year. Furthermore, many posts come with different income or expenses, which makes planning your finances extra challenging. This presentation will discuss concepts and strategies to help you plan your household finance around income fluctuation and to avoid common pitfalls. You will learn practical steps to implement in your budget, retirement plan and insurance plan through this hands-on workshop.

An EFM and co-owner of Pavlov Financial Planning, Hui-chin Chen helps globally mobile Gen X and Millennial families plan their finances around their long-term goals and nomad lifestyle. She has also written extensively on financial planning topics at Money Matters for Globetrotters, drawing from her experience as a financial planner and working locally in five countries in the past ten years.

Advance Care Planning: Making Your Wishes Known Beforehand

A Presentation by Dr. Jeff Kin

A former Peace Corps volunteer and Army veteran, Jeff Kin studied medicine at George Washington University. In 2010 he moved to Northern Virginia and worked for Kaiser Permanente as a hospitalist.  He started to work in palliative care shortly thereafter and became boarded in the field in 2012.  Since this time he has become the lead physician for Kaiser palliative care in Northern Virginia.  He spends the majority of his time in palliative care, serving patients at Virginia Hospital Center as well as other area hospitals and nursing homes.

Through his work Dr. Kin has become convinced that everyone should make their wishes known to their loved ones if and when they become seriously ill.  Dr. Kin writes, “We all at some point face these issues and it is not bad luck to discuss these issues.  In fact it is the greatest gift someone can give to their family.”
