On Saturday, May 5, 2018 for its 11th year, Cultural Tourism DC hosted once again the “Around the World Embassy Tour,” part of Passport DC, a month-long celebration of worldwide cultures. Jan Du Plain, a member of the Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW) and its Foreign-Born Spouses group, serves as the Embassy Liaison for Passport DC’s “Around the World Embassy Tour.” It is a wonderful, uniquely Washington experience for families, individuals, and groups! Through these programs, Cultural Tourism DC encourages people to explore Washington, DC, boost the community’s economic prosperity, and become civically engaged.
Indeed, on May 5, both visitors and local residents traveled the world in one day, visiting more than 50 embassies to learn about culture, food, fashion, arts and artisans, music, dance, and more by hosting DC residents and visitors inside their embassies. In the past, embassies have treated visitors to karate demonstrations, dance performances, sari wrapping lessons, police dog training, henna art and more. This year, embassies participating included Afghanistan, African Union, Albania, Angola, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, China (for the first time), Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Gabon, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Korea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Mexico, Micronesia, Morocco, Nepal, Oman, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, and Zimbabwe, expecting nearly 30,000 people to visit the various embassies during a single day (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) and learn about countries from across the globe.
