In Memoriam: Sally Ann Hurl Phelps

AAFSW member Sally Ann Hurl Phelps passed away on Nov. 22, 2015. A graduate of Colby Junior College, New Hampshire, she was married to Foreign Service officer Homer Root Phelps, Jr., raising her five children through several overseas tours, in Warsaw, Stuttgart, Berlin, and Bonn, remaining active in Family/Community Liaison Office activities overseas throughout the years.

Sally’s daughter, Ann Phelps, writes, “Mom was very proud to be a Foreign Service officer’s wife. She had many wonderful stories to share about making life overseas work for a growing family as well as, during the old Foreign Service, the responsibilities of a wife to work for and represent the United States. Mom spoke of how important the coming together and helping one another was in the overseas community.”

A memorial service was held at Aldersgate Methodist Church in Alexandria, VA, on December 5. The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the AAFSW Scholarship Fund.
