Cryptocurrency and the Future of El Salvador’s Economy

AAFSW cordially invites you to join us for an interesting, informative presentation by Her Excellency Milena Mayorga Ambassador of El Salvador, on June 7, 2022 at 11:00 AM at DACOR-Bacon House.

The President of El Salvador announced a Bitcoin Law which made El Salvador the first country to adopt bitcoin cryptocurrency as their official legal tender. Bitcoin is accepted  as payment in September 2021.  The government backed digital wallet lets anyone use the cryptocurrency. 

The hope has been that El Salvador would digitize the economy, decrease dependence on the U.S. dollar, lower remittance fees – which account for about 20% of the country’s gross domestic product – and drive investment.  El Salvador could become the first country to prove the transformative power of cryptocurrency on a national scale. 

Is this plan for cryptocurrency working for El Salvador’s future as it was forecast?
