AAFSW, founded in 1960, places a strong emphasis on community and mutual support in a variety of contexts:

  • Advocacy for spouses and children,
  • Orientation of newcomers – including a special group for foreign-born spouses, and advice related to EFM employment,
  • Distribution of scholarships,
  • Responsible for the Secretary of State Awards (SOSA) and the Champions of Career Enhancement for Eligible Family Members (CCE-EFM) Award, recognizing extraordinary volunteers,
  • A BookStore at Foggy Bottom (HST) with a wide selection of reading material, art, and jewelry,
  • Support in case of an evacuation, or a difficult personal family transition.

AAFSW provides many resources to learn

•, a comprehensive portal of all FS-related resources,
  • Evacuation Network, to help when leaving post,
  • Livelines, a private listserv for members,
  • The Global Link, a monthly newsletter for members,
  • and great events where you can have fun and learn about different cultures.

…  and network:

  • Monthly cultural events, often with the participation of foreign embassies,
  • Monthly happy hours in person and virtually,
  • FS Community Business Directory.
