Washington, DC 20037

AAFSW cordially invites you to join us for an enjoyable and educational Tai Chi workshop, in the relaxing, welcoming atmosphere of the Melrose Georgetown Hotel, to learn about how to improve your Posture, Balance, Breathing, and Coordination of the Movements, and enjoy a light lunch on Tuesday, May 22, at 11:00 a.m. The Melrose Georgetown Hotel is located at 2430 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC, close to the Foggy Bottom Metro station (Orange, Silver and Blue lines).

This workshop is offered by international gold medal winner Shunying Barela. Shunying brings over twenty-five years of experience teaching taijiquan. As a practitioner, she has won gold medals in international competitions in Hong Kong, Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas. She is skilled in various forms, including the 108 Movement Wu Family Form, and the 24 Movement Form, also known as the Beijing Form, the world’s most practiced form.

Taijiquan, or as it is better known in America, Tai Chi Chuan, usually simply called Tai Chi, is a Chinese martial art especially known for its health benefits. Regular practice helps improve joint mobility, reduces high blood pressure and improves general circulation. It is practiced in slow motion in order to focus on proper balance and body alignment, both important factors in general health. Because of its focus on balance it is especially good for seniors who often suffer from injuries due to falls.

Shunying Barela is an outstanding practitioner of Tai Chi. An international competitor, she has won gold, silver, and bronze medals in several competitions, not only in China but also in the U.S.

In this presentation, we will first demonstrate the 24 Movement Simplified Form, the most widely practiced form of Tai Chi in the world. Then we will present instruction in the 8 Movement Form. This is the shortest form available and full instruction can be covered in a single meeting of an hour or so. Although short, it is still a well-balanced form presenting the most important moves of Tai Chi for regular practice.
Shunying especially focuses on the health aspects of the art. She is a true font of knowledge about the treatment of many kinds of pain and dysfunction.

RSVP by Friday, May 18 to office@aafsw.org or 703-820-5420, and send a check made out to AAFSW for $25.00 per person to AAFSW Reservations, 4001 Ninth Street North #214, Arlington, VA 22203.
