New AAFSW “Spouses in Transition” Coordinator

AAFSW wishes to welcome Karen Villar, our new AAFSW “Spouses in Transition” Coordinator. Karen will be working together with Sheila Switzer, our AAFSW Program Chair and AAFSW Foreign Born Spouses State Liaison, on issues regarding AAFSW spouses in transition.

Karen was born and raised in México City. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and she has worked in various financial institutions for five years. Karen has been living in Washington, DC for the last year and she is currently working as an interpreter for the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and as a seasonal registrar for the FCPS Student Registration Office. Prior to that, she has worked as a roving secretary (2 years) at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary, and for the Budget and Fiscal section (2 years) at the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Karen has also volunteered in classrooms with the schools in Virginia, and she has worked with art classes and food banks. Karen taught Spanish in Bucharest, Romania as an after school activity, and she has assisted with the Body Awareness classes for 1st graders at Vientiane, Laos. AAFSW would like to thank Karen for volunteering to help AAFSW in such a sensitive area of need.
