Founded in 1982, the Czech Boys Choir Boni Pueri is one of Europe’s leading ensembles, carrying on the tradition of a choir that has been active in the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus in Prague since 1252. The present choir, which has 200 members ranging in age from 4 to 19, has performed more than 3,000 concerts not only in the Czech Republic, but also on tours in Japan (Tokyo Bunka Kaikan concert hall, St Mary’s Cathedral), the United States (Grace Cathedral in San Francisco), Canada (Francis Winspear Centre for Music, Edmonton), South Korea (Seoul Arts Centre), China (National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Shanghai Oriental Art Centre), the United Kingdom, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Netherlands (Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, De Doelen in Rotterdam), Denmark, Finland, France, Italy (Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo), Monaco, Germany (Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg), Poland, Austria, Russia (Svetlanov Hall and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow), Spain (Basilica Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona), Switzerland, Ukraine and the Vatican (Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore).

Boni Pueri also performs at important state events and international meetings and conferences (including the Czech national award ceremony for Sir Nicholas Winton, the state visits of German President Joachim Gauck, Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the enthronement of Cardinal Dominik Duka) and has appeared alongside numerous distinguished artists (José Carreras, Bobby McFerrin, Thomas Hampson, Pavel Šporcl and others). The choir has made recordings for television and radio and worked with important ensembles and orchestras the world over, and released more than 30 CDs.

Boni Pueri also works closely with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2010, the choir participated in monumental performances of Mahler’s 8th Symphony—the “Symphony of a Thousand”—under the conductor’s baton of Christoph Eschenbach (Prague, Hanover, Hamburg). In 2017, the choir accepted an invitation to participate in a several-year music project titled “Czechs Masters in Vienna” and collaborated with the famous Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester to perform Johann Stamitz’s Missa solemnis.

The choir is part of a unique arts school for boys’ voices, the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. The Boni Pueri choir received the 2012 Award of the Czech Choirs Association for its exemplary promotion of Czech culture abroad, and in 2015 the choir was given the title of Cultural Ambassador of Europe by the European Federation of Choirs.

Upcoming Egyptian Cultural Program

A JOURNEY TO THE LAND OF THE EGYPTIAN PHARAOHS
Science and Technology to Leverage Culture and Cultural Heritage

The Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW) in coordination with the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Washington, DC cordially invite you to a unique and fascinating Cultural program, presented by the distinguished Dr. Yasser ElShayeb from the University of Cairo.

The program will take place on Tuesday October 2nd at 10:30 am. in the Burns Auditorium in the George Marshall Center of the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC. Following Dr. ElShayeb’s presentation there will be a traditional Egyptian Tanoura dancer.

With the emergence of technologies in the first two decades of the 21st century, it becomes evident that the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) should be extended to the culture and cultural heritage domains.

Throughout the world, there are many examples of this and many successes have been achieved, resulting in numerous success stories. It is believed that those stories should be highlighted and disseminated in order to expand the knowledge and create new opportunities and applications.

In this presentation we will expose how ICT may contribute to better knowledge of various cultures, how ICT may be used to disseminate and exchange information about cultural heritage sites, and probably draw a potential strategy for the contribution of ICT in the domain of cultural heritage.

The second part of the presentation will be dedicated to recent applications of technologies at the Giza Plateau in Egypt, where scientists from Egypt, Japan, France, and Canada were able to successfully employ cosmic rays in order to scan the internal structure of the great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu), and were able to determine the existence of previously unknown voids within the pyramid. This work was the subject of a recent publication in “Nature.”

Please RSVP by Friday, September 28 to office@aafsw.org or 703-820-5420 to register. All attendees without a State Department badge will need to provide their date of birth and a driver’s license or passport number to submit to the Office of Security at the State Department. The charge for the program is $10.00 per person. Please send your information and a check (made out to AAFSW) to our headquarters at 4001 North Ninth Street, Suite 214, Arlington VA, 22203.

We will start at 10:30 a.m. with a social time, where you can try some delicious traditional Egyptian cuisine, followed by the presentation of Dr. Yasser ElShayeb beginning at 11:00 a.m. and concluding with the Tanoura dancer.
We look forward to seeing you.

She pioneered the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in the Oil Sands of Canada, providing branded expert excess Ghanaian construction workforce to alleviate the skills shortages in BC and Albert’s Canada.

She is also a former TV show co-hostess of USA QVC-TV’s popular Destination:Africa home shopping TV show, the largest Afrocentric inspired TV shopping show where she grossed several million dollars for the show which she co- established and developed high sell out products. She is also the first African woman to own a clothing line and boutique in a major USA department store chain- Dayton-Hudsons and Marshall Fields- an experience she brings to sosjobs4women Ghana, a womens job creation program she founded with a focus on fashion and agric. As a Philanthropist, the Princess co-founded the rural Nekotech Center of Excellence -Ada, with the late, mega US star, Mr. Isaac Hayes- – with contributions from several of Hollywood’s top actors including Denzel Washington, Steven Seagal, Tom Cruise and Nancy Cartwright (Voice of Bart Simpson the number 1 cartoon in the USA).

She co-founded the multiple award winning Save a Million Lives (SAML)from HIV/AIDS Project with the African American National Medical Association and Student National Medical Association- saving millions of lives through HIV/AIDS awareness video series, free medical care and medications, and a food security Agric mobilization program in partnership FAO and Roy-Utah, USA farmers provide food to the rural poor.

The SAML project won several awards globally, including White House and Buckingham Palace recognitions. She led the University of Alberta, Canada’s response to the Ebola crisis – Co-organising an awareness symposium. She founded the Global Peace Chest initiative which sponsors youth to the UN to start them early in the peace Building mindset. She co-chaired the “We Support Peace” campaign to the United Nations and received a letter of endorsement from the then Secretary General: HE Ban Ki-moon.

Recognising that the one million jobs agenda will mostly be achieved through “successful entrepreneurs in an ecosystem of economic excellence” – Dr Ocansey developed the “12 SOS Keys to An Economic Ecosystem of Excellence” which coins her unique term: “Ojalawashikapreneurs” :” Ojalawashika” means “expensive money”. She cites that the chief cause of business failure in many cases in Ghana and Africa is due to ojalawa-shikaeneurial businesses being run with “ Ojalawashika” which provides very high interest rate loans 32-100% interest – therefore both banks and entrepreneurs fail. The SOS Investment Drive series is focused on attracting low interest rate banking loan systems to Ghana. Her primary focus is to create one million Shikapreneurs (defined as “trained successful good intentioned money making entrepreneurs with access to low income funds with a focus on turning a profit quickly) through one proven Agricultural program: Sweet on Stevia – a fast growing natural plant sweetener which is a healthy alternative to sugar.

She believes Africa’s real capital needing urgent development is her human capital and to accelerate this development, she advocates for the empowerment and decent opportunities for her women. She was recently named the GODSU Women’s Empowerment and Employment Champion 2017 in the USA. The World Bank made a documentary on her life in their docu-drama series: “Voices of a New Ghana”. She is indeed the voice of a new Ghana, fast emerging on a new track to success through inclusion.

With success comes persecution, Princess Asie Ocansey was falsely accused of Human Trafficking, for which she was acquitted and discharged, after going to court for two years, with not a single “victim” showing up. The Princess showed remarkable strength of character, resilience, integrity and patience during this difficult and trying period during which time she attained her Doctorate in Theology and formed a personal unbreakable relationship with God. The persecution deepened her conviction that total forgiveness is the way to Peace. She has learned the hard way to eradicate envy and provide human dignity an opportunity by giving a “hand up” to her people to come out of poverty instead of “hand outs”.

Murder Is Her Hobby: Frances Glessner Lee and the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death

On January 25, a group of 30 AAFSW members and friends enjoyed a guided tour of the Renwick Gallery, including the fascinating exhibit of Frances Glessner Lee’s “Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death.” Our knowledgeable docent first took us to the other impressive Renwick exhibits, explaining that the Renwick was the first building in the U.S. built especially as a museum. She then told us that Ms. Glessner Lee (1878-1962), an heiress to the International Harvester fortune, was not permitted to go to college, but was expected to excel in the domestic arts. Eventually, after divorcing her husband and coming into her inheritance in her 50s, Glessner Lee was free to pursue her lifelong interest in forensic science.

In the 1940s and 50s, Glessner Lee designed and crafted her extraordinary Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, described by the museum as “exquisitely detailed miniature crime scenes – to train homicide investigators to ‘convict the guilty, clear the innocent, and find the truth in a nutshell.’” These dioramas, which are still used in forensic training today, were accompanied by brief explanations—however, the final results of the criminal investigations were not disclosed, allowing Renwick viewers to search for clues and come up with possible solutions.

We all came away with a great respect for this talented woman, who was determined to follow her passion for forensic science in spite of the obstacles imposed by society.
