The Family Liaison Office's Education and Youth Officer, with the help of a Program Assistant, provides information and counsel directly to Foreign Service families and to Community Liaison Office Coordinators on:

Education options available at overseas posts.

Education allowances.

Approximately 200 boarding schools in the U.S. and abroad. reports on visits.

Availability of special needs services both in the DC area and at overseas posts.

Summer camps and educational programs.

Washington area public and private schools.

College admissions process and financial aid.
-
Home-schooling and distance learning for elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels.
As FLO's Youth Coordinators, the Education and Youth Officer and the Program Assistant maintain contact and advise the youth programs sponsored by the Foreign Service Youth Foundation (FSYF). These groups include Around the World in a Lifetime (AWAL) for teens, and Globe Trotters, the preteen group. The Program Assistant facilitates monthly AWAL newsletters (Wings) and promotes activities of both groups to returning families. AWAL chapters at overseas posts are forming with guidance from FLO and the FSYF board.
AdvocacyThe Education and Youth Officer analyzes information from Foreign Service families and advocates for legislative and regulatory changes which affect quality of life issues for Foreign Service children and youth.
