In September of 2011, the newly elected AAFSW board met for the first time. As activities were reviewed for the year, the board concluded that there were too many events for members that occurred during the day, making them difficult for those with work or child care obligations to attend.
First Vice President Jen Dinoia suggested hosting a happy hour at the Oakwood Apartments in Falls Church, VA, a central location and temporary residence for many Foreign Service community members. The happy hour would would take place every other month for two hours in the evening. It would allow for new and returning Foreign Service officers and family members to mingle and learn about AAFSW membership (not required to attend). The events could include also guests from the Family Liaison Office, the Transition Center or other State Department offices with useful information to share.
As of August, 2012, AAFSW had hosted six Happy Hours with an average attendance of about 40 people. The events run from 7 to 9 p.m. and take place in one of the community rooms at Oakwood Falls Church. Wine, soda, and light refreshments (including the famous olive medley) are served to round out a fun and informative evening.
The Happy Hours have been so popular that AAFSW is now hosting “themed” events, such as the Unaccompanied Tour Happy Hour that took place in May, 2012. We had a full house of attendees, as well as special guests from FLO, the Transition Center, and Employee Counseling Services.
Happy Hours are always announced in the Global Link newsletter, on this website and on our Facebook page. If you happen to be in the Washington, D.C. area at any time coinciding with a Happy Hour, please plan to attend. We would love to meet you or welcome you back! Questions? Email email@example.com.
