2008 AFSA Academic and Art Merit Winners

 The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Scholarship Fund announces the 2008 Academic and Art Merit Award winners which will be bestowed to Foreign Service high school seniors on May 2, 2008.  Winners receive $1,800 awards and Honorable Mention winners receive $800 awards.  Judges are individuals from the Foreign Service community.   A total of $35,700 will be bestowed to 26 students.    

 Fifty four students applied for the Academic Merit Awards competing on their grade point average, Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores, two-page essay, letters of recommendation,
extra-curricular activities, and any special circumstances.  From the Academic Merit Award applicants, a Best Essay winner and a Community Service winner were selected.  Fifteen students submitted art applications under one of the following categories:  visual arts, musical arts, dance or creative writing.  Art applicants were judged on their art submission, letters of recommendation, two-page essay, and any special circumstances.

Eight named Academic Merit scholarships have been established, and these awards are bestowed to the highest scoring students.  These named scholarships, in alphabetical order, are:   

  1. Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW) Scholarship,
  2. John and Priscilla Becker Family Scholarship,
  3. Turner C. Cameron Memorial Scholarship (2 awards)
  4. John C. Leary Memorial Scholarship,
  5. Joanna and Robert Martin Scholarship – (2 awards), and the
  6. Donald S. Spigler Memorial and Maria Giuseppa Spigler Scholarship.
